Class Cancellation – Training in Acquired Structures, Saturday, June 1 at Gloucester County Fire Academy

The following class, Training in Acquired Structures, which was scheduled for Saturday, June 1 at Gloucester County Fire Academy has been cancelled at the request of the instructor.   We apologize for any inconvenience. Please note that there are still other classes available for instructor credit this semester. One class, that is highly recommended is Turn PTSD Into PTG: It Will Change Your Life. This class is scheduled for Saturday, June 15 at Ocean County Fire Academy.   Here is some information about this class: Turn Post-Traumatic Stress into Post-Traumatic Growth is important for all emergency responders to be able to learn skills for not only themselves, but their co-workers and members of their communities!   You do not have to be diagnosed with post-traumatic stress to benefit from this class.  Why?  Because repeated exposure to trauma (RET) is experienced by emergency responders as we continually respond to emergency calls as part of our everyday duties.  Over a career in public service, this cumulative exposure adds up on a responders’ mental health and can be detrimental to their lives both personally and professionally.  It also impacts an emergency responders spouse and children as well.  Furthermore, instructors, recruiters, supervisors, and chief officers must be aware of signs and symptoms of post-traumatic stress to enable them to assist their employees or volunteers.  It is important to remember, when a responder decides to serve the community, they could have previous mental baggage from the military, their childhood, marriage problems, or a challenging life event.  This increases their chances of developing post-traumatic stress during their career.  If we as instructors, recruiters, supervisors, and chief officers are not aware of this, we are not taking care of our people and cannot provide them with the appropriate help.   The biggest issue in emergency services today is mental health.  If you still think this doesn’t apply to you, then you are not abreast of the current landscape of emergency services.  Please attend this class to learn how to better help your people both personally and professionally with both skills and resources.  We as leaders must be on the cutting edge of information whether it deals with operations or other important aspects of the job.  I assure you, if you attend this class you will walk away with valuable information.   This course is probably one of the best that we are currently running. It is appropriate for everyone, whether you’ve experienced PTSD or not! I’m guessing almost everyone knows someone who has experienced it and that “someone” may be in your fire department or recruit class right now!   Even if you don’t know anyone, what if in the course of your day you encounter someone who does? Do you know how to appropriately help them?   Register for this course at www.keanfiresafety.com by logging into your account.
